Biography: 

Claudia Califano  received the “Laurea” degree ("summa cum laude") in Electronic Engineering from the University of Rome "La Sapienza", by discussing her dissertation on Nonlinear discrete time systems and their study with algebraic tools. In 1998 she received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Rome La Sapienza, with a dissertation on Nonlinear discrete time systems in a geometric framework. Since 2000 she holds an Assistant Professor position at the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering Antonio Ruberti, University of Rome La Sapienza.

Visiting positions, Awards and Services

Between April 1999 and June 2000 she has held a post-doc position at the Laboratoire des Signaux et Systèmes - CNRS -Supelec - Gif Sur Yvette. Since 2000 she is Assistant Professor at the University of Rome La Sapienza - Faculty of Engineering. In 1999 she was awarded an eleven month CNR-NATO grant and a CNR grant. She has been a visiting research at LSS, Gyf sur Yvette, France and at IRCCyN, Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France.

She is Senior member of the IEEE Control Systems Society. Since 2012 she is a member of the CSS Technical Committee on Nonlinear Systems and Control and member of the  IFAC Technical Committee  “Nonlinear Control Systems”. Since 2014 she serves as an Associate Editor for the IMA Mathematical Control and Information Journal. Since 2016 she is Technical Associate Editor for the IFAC World Congress and Associate Editor for the IEEE Control System Society, Conference Editorial Board. She is member of the IPC of the IEEE CoDIT'17. Since 2017 she is Vice Chair for Education for the IFAC TC Nonlinear Systems

She was awarded a best session presentation award at ACC 2010 in Baltimore for the presentation of the paper “On the observer design through output scaling in discrete–time” coauthored with S. Monaco, D. Normand-Cyrot. The poster presentation of the paper “Essential Orders and Nonlinear Dicrete-time Decoupling” , IFAC'96, San Francisco, CA (USA), coauthored with S. Monaco and D. Normand Cyrot was finalist at the poster paper prize.

Research Activity

Her research interests are in the area of nonlinear discrete-time and continuous-time systems. Specifically

  • she has been working on the use of chronological calculus and Volterra series to describe nonlinear dynamical systems;
  • in the discrete time context she has obtained results concerning the decoupling problem with stability via static state feedback and dynamic feddback;
  • she has investigated on the use of coordinates change and output transformation to achieve the equivalence to canonical forms extremely interesting when dealing with problems such as observers design;
  • she has investigated on the geometric properties of dynamical systems which are equivalent via dynamic feedback to linear systems;
  • she has been working on the digital control on high performances drivers
  • she has been working on nonlinear time delays systems, in particular on decompositions linked to the properties of observability and accessibility;
  • she has investigated on the integrability of one-forms in the time-delay context.

 Teaching Activity

From 2001 to 2004 she has been lecturer for the undergraduate course of Modelling and Control of Environmental Systems (Modellistica e Controllo dei Sistemi ambientali). From 2003 to 2007 she has been lecturer for the undergraduate course of System Theory (Teoria dei Sistemi); since 2008 she is lecturer of the undergraduate course of Fundamentals in Automatic Control (Fondamenti di Automatica). Since 2012 she is lecturer of the graduate course of Digital control systems (Sistemi digitali di controllo)

From 2001 to 2013 she has been the didactic coordinator of the Master post-laurea in Emergency Engineering.
